Protecting and conserving Arizona’s wildlife

Resource conservation is at the core of SRP’s mission. See the ways we’re protecting and conserving native plants and wildlife while meeting the needs of our customers.

Our legacy and mission

As the nation’s oldest multipurpose Federal Reclamation Project, we have over 100 years of experience preserving and protecting Arizona’s natural and cultural resources through responsible management and conservation.

We're committed to protecting the state’s wildlife and conserving habitats now and for generations to come. We do this through community leadership, comprehensive compliance programs, and proactive efforts and partnerships.

Avian Protection Program

Power infrastructure can pose potential hazards to Arizona’s avian community. To protect bird species in our service territory and prevent avian-caused outages, we've adopted a voluntary Avian Protection Program (APP) and support programs that conserve and help recover species throughout Arizona.

Get to know some of the species we help protect and how:

  • Raptors and eagles

    Raptors and eagles

We design power lines and retrofit existing infrastructure to minimize risk to raptors and eagles.

    Songbirds

    Songbirds

We use surveys prior to power and water operations work to minimize impacts on songbirds and other species’ nests, eggs and young.

  • Bald eagles

We support the statewide interagency Southwestern Bald Eagle Management Committee.

    Burrowing owls

    Burrowing owls

We make sure to monitor and protect these owls prior to construction and during operation and maintenance work along our power lines and canals.

Habitat Conservation Plans

SRP is working to offset the impacts of dam and reservoir operations on threatened, endangered and at-risk species that are associated with Roosevelt, Horseshoe and Bartlett reservoirs. We've taken action to mitigate the effects on 17 native species and their habitats across central Arizona.
