Avian Protection Program

SRP maintains an expansive power system to ensure reliability of the grid and meet the needs of SRP customers. This power infrastructure can pose potential hazards to Arizona’s avian community.

To protect bird species in our service territory, we've adopted a voluntary Avian Protection Program (APP) and support programs that conserve and help recover species throughout Arizona.

Meet the birds we help protect

Bald eagle

Bald eagles

  • SRP is one of 14 different organizations involved with the Southwestern Bald Eagle Management Committee.
  • SRP also provides equipment like helicopters and bucket trucks to Arizona Game and Fish employees so they can survey nests and monitor the eagles' health.

Burrowing owls

Burrowing owls

  • Burrowing owls are a protected species in the state of Arizona under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
  • Any time SRP is going to do a project where earth is being moved, we go out in the field and survey for burrowing owls.
  • We work with partners like U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arizona Game & Fish Department to determine what is best for the owls.
