Water conservation is an intentional approach to using water as efficiently as possible, which helps ensure a long-term water supply for all Arizonans.

How does water conservation work?

Each one of us can conserve water by finding ways to maximize water efficiency in our everyday lives. Water conservation is a collective responsibility, and everyone can take action — from individual residents to large-scale industrial water users. While big projects and new technologies can make a splash, simple actions like fixing leaks or installing smart irrigation devices are all valuable ways to make every drop count.

Whether you're inside or outside of your home, making small adjustments can significantly reduce water usage. Here are some practical water-saving tips to learn and implement at home.

SRP's history and leadership in water conservation

SRP’s role in water conservation is more than just a modern-day effort. Dating back more than 120 years, SRP was founded on the need to maintain a safe, reliable and long-lasting water supply. Since 1903, we have helped shape Arizona’s growth by managing the Salt and Verde watersheds.

SRP’s first domestic water agreement was signed with the City of Phoenix in 1952. Ever since, SRP has empowered Valley communities to save water through diverse conservation initiatives.

Working toward SRP’s 2035 Sustainability Goals

SRP is working to conserve 5 billion gallons of water through partnership by 2035. It’s an ambitious and necessary goal that we cannot achieve alone. That’s why SRP has built strong strategic partnerships with municipalities, universities, businesses, nonprofits and more to stay on the forefront of water efficiency initiatives. SRP is working across the Valley to maximize water conservation efforts, including:

Working with municipalities to provide dollar-for-dollar rebate matches for grass to low-water-use landscape conversions
Supporting nonprofit organizations like Friends of the Verde River (Opens in a new tab) to fund grants for homeowners and businesses to bring their water conservation ideas to life
Partnering with Water – Use It Wisely (Opens in a new tab) and the Environmental Education Exchange (Opens in a new tab) to distribute free water-saving device kits to Arizona communities in need
Hosting the annual SRP Water Conservation Expo to unite Arizona water experts, display the latest water conservation technologies and offer steep discounts on water-efficient irrigation products
Working with commercial, industrial and institutional water users like the Phoenix Zoo to implement water efficiency upgrades, including submeters and smart irrigation technologies

Our long-term water conservation vision

Water system projects

Improving the function and capabilities of our water systems is always top of mind for us. SRP is working on the following projects to restore water capacity and improve water delivery across the Valley.

Verde Reservoirs Sediment Mitigation Project (VRSMP)

SRP is working with the Bureau of Reclamation and municipal, tribal and agricultural partners to restore water capacity lost to sedimentation in the Verde reservoirs.

SRP-CAP Interconnection Facility (SCIF)

In partnership with Central Arizona Project (CAP) and several other municipal entities, we are working on an interconnection project that would allow water stored in SRP reservoirs to be pumped into the CAP canal and delivered to customers outside of SRP's water service territory.

Investing in new technology

SRP is consistently testing automated devices that can better measure and control water deliveries, as well as improving techniques for well drilling and aquifer management. We also work with other water providers around the state as we explore opportunities for desalination, which is the process of removing salt from salt water to make it suitable for drinking and other essential uses.

We further partner with Arizona’s universities on studying ways water can be conserved and used more efficiently.
