Electric vehicles differ from gas vehicles in many ways, and it’s natural to have questions about those differences. SRP is here to help answer your questions so you can make your choice with confidence and find the best EV for your needs and lifestyle.

Addressing EV misconceptions

From school drop-offs to daily commutes, electric vehicles are now a regular choice for drivers everywhere. Despite their growing popularity, outdated information and myths are still circulating about EVs. Here are a few:

Misconception

EVs  aren’t good for the environment.

Myth
  • EVs pollute as much as  gas vehicles.

Fact
  • EVs have zero tailpipe emissions and typically have less than half the greenhouse gas emissions over their lifetime compared to traditional gasoline powered vehicles.

Misconception

EVs are more expensive.

Myth
  • EVs are only suited for luxury buyers.

Fact
  • EV makes, models and prices span a wide range to fit any lifestyle or budget. Furthermore, lower fuel and maintenance costs also improve affordability.

Misconception

EV batteries don’t last and are expensive to replace.

Myth
  • EV batteries fail after a few years and cost thousands of dollars to replace.

Fact
  • EV batteries are designed to last the lifespan of the vehicle, and batteries typically come with an 8-year warranty. Many automakers often extend the battery warranty. Used car shoppers can have an EV battery tested to determine its health.

Misconception

EV battery range is short and only for driving around town.

Myth
  • EVs can’t handle long trips or daily commuting needs.

Fact
  • The average range on newer EVs is over 300 miles, and automakers continue to expand this range. Fast-charging networks are expanding, making long-distance travel increasingly practical.

Misconception

EV charging is slow.

Myth
  • EV drivers spend hours waiting at charging stations.

Fact
  • Most owners charge at home, and public fast chargers can add 100-250 miles of range in 30 minutes, with speeds increasing each year.

Misconception

EVs are overloading the SRP power grid.

Myth
  • Widespread EV adoption will hurt the grid.

Fact
  • Not all EV owners charge at the same time, which means charging doesn’t place a large demand on the grid. SRP provides price plans with super-off-peak hours to encourage charging when demand is lower. We also offer programs like SRP EV Smart Charge™, where customers can let SRP help optimize their charging to ensure the lowest costs.
