As a not-for-profit utility, every decision we make is in the best interest of our customers. Without the need to generate profits for investors, any surplus revenue is reinvested directly back into improving infrastructure, enhancing customer programs and benefiting the communities we serve. Our not-for-profit status also enables us to provide the lowest rates possible for our customers.

SRP manages a 13,000-square-mile watershed that provides central Arizona with water, ultimately enabling us to deliver more than 244 billion gallons of water annually for homes, businesses and irrigation.

We do more than provide energy and water to homes and businesses — we empower communities. SRP provides assistance programs, grants, volunteerism and corporate contributions. Each year, we invest more than $5 million in nonprofits, education and community enrichment programs. How we started

Our story began in 1903, nearly a decade before Arizona officially became a state. As the Valley started to grow, local ranchers and farmers pledged their land to get Theodore Roosevelt Dam built as a way to responsibly manage the infrequent, yet raging, waters of the Salt River. They formed the Salt River Valley Water Users’ Association, the founding group of Salt River Project (SRP).

How we govern

As a not-for-profit, our sole purpose is to serve our customers and the state of Arizona. Our governance is rooted in local representation, with landowners electing leadership to ensure decisions prioritize reliability, affordability and sustainability for the communities we serve.

Structure and processes

SRP is governed by two organizations: the Salt River Valley Water Users’ Association and the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District. Both consist of elected Board and Council members who work closely with executive management, including Jim Pratt, SRP's General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, to establish policies that support our mission. Together, they're dedicated to meeting the changing water and power needs of the Salt River Valley.

When it comes to serving our customers, we believe transparency is crucial. As a community-based, not-for-profit utility with the highest credit rating in the country, we regularly share detailed financial reports and annual company statistics to show how we are managing resources responsibly. Our customers are able to review:

Frequently asked questions

As a not-for-profit, SRP doesn’t have investors or shareholders. Instead of creating profits for investors, we put extra revenue back into improving water and power infrastructure and services for our community.

Instead of paying profits to investors and shareholders, we are able to use the money to benefit customers. One of those ways is keeping rates as low as possible. This helps customers pay about 18% less than other Arizona utilities*.

The Valley’s power is something SRP plans very carefully. We continue to invest in a strong, well‑maintained grid. This helps prevent outages and keeps electricity reliable. SRP is ranked No. 3 nationally for its reliability among utilities with over 500,000 customers*.

To help protect our water supply, SRP manages the Salt and Verde watersheds and the rivers that flow from them as well as seven reservoirs. We also store water underground, partner with cities and work on projects that ensure the health of our forested watersheds. With our eyes on the future, we also have a goal of saving 5 billion gallons of water by 2035.
