Public involvement
Planning ahead to serve its customers is one reason why SRP is an industry leader in power reliability, system performance, power restoration and customer satisfaction.
SRP's Public Involvement department actively pursues constructive interaction with communities to site critical infrastructure or other sensitive SRP projects.
Public Involvement incorporates technical and educational elements in its outreach efforts to the people, organizations and jurisdictional planning groups in each community. The department then works to ensure that SRP project management receives constructive feedback from the communities.
Once a project is sited, Public Involvement remains in contact with the community through construction providing a continuous thread of communication from project start to finish.
Developing working relationships with local residents, organizations and community leaders helps SRP provide the infrastructure necessary to meet the electric and water needs of those who live, work, and play in Arizona.
Generation projects currently in the siting process:
- Pinal Energy Projects
To meet the growing power needs of its service area, SRP is moving ahead with plans for additional generating facilities in northeast Pinal County that will protect SRP customers from market fluctuations and power shortages.
Generation projects currently under construction:
- Springerville Unit 4
SRP is constructing a new 400 MW, coal-fired generating unit at the existing Springerville Generating Station (SGS) in Springerville. The new generating unit, Unit 4 (or SGS4) will help SRP meet future customer needs and provides the utility with a more diverse generation portfolio.
These include active 500kV, 230kV and 115kV power line projects. Please visit www.azpower.org for more detailed information about all extra-high voltage (EHV) siting processes.
500kV
500kV projects currently under construction:
- Palo-Verde to Pinal West (PV-PW)
The PV-PW project is composed of new 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines that will serve Pinal and Maricopa Counties. The project involves transporting power from the area near Palo Verde Generating Station to a new substation in western Pinal County (PW) near Hidden Valley.
- Pinal West to Southeast Valley/Browning (PW-SEV/BRG)
The PW-SEV/BRG project involves transporting power from the new Pinal West (PW) substation in western Pinal County to a new 500 kV substation that will interconnect with the existing Santa Rosa substation. The 500 kV line will extend to the new Southeast Valley (SEV) substation in northeastern Pinal County.
From there, a double circuit 500/230kV transmission line will be sited along with a new 230/69 kV substation (RS19) to be located northeast of the town of Queen Creek. From the RS 19 substation, the new 500/230 kV transmission line will continue on to the existing Browning substation in east Mesa.
There are no 500kV projects currently in the siting process.

230kV
230kV projects currently in design and construction:
- Desert Basin
SRP recently completed the process of siting a new 230-kilovolt (230kV) transmission line from the Desert Basin Generating Station to the recently permitted PW-SEV/BRG 500/230kV corridor. The 230kV line will then continue to the Pinal South substation to be located east of Casa Grande, near Eleven Mile Corner Road.
- Abel-Moody
SRP intends to site and build a double-circuit 230kV transmission line connecting two SRP-owned and previously sited 230/69kV substation sites to serve developing areas in and around Queen Creek. The new transmission line will also connect to a new 230/69kV substation that will be sited and built as part of this project.

The 69kV distribution system is the backbone of SRP's neighborhood electrical system. By connecting neighborhood substations, this system provides power to your immediate community.
69kV projects currently in the siting process:
- Morcom Loop (Queen Creek)
SRP is conducting a collaborative public process to determine the most cost-effective and beneficial way to enhance the 69kV delivery system in Queen Creek.
69kV projects currently in the design phase:
- Mesa: Browning-McPherson line
A new power line will connect Browning substation at Signal Butte, south of Guadalupe Road, to the future McPherson substation at Ray and Mountain roads.
- Mesa/Apache Junction: Browning-Scussel line
A new power line will connect Browning substation at Signal Butte, south of Guadalupe Road, to the planned Scussel substation near Lost Dutchman Heights.
- Pinal County: Quail-Meacham-Watkins line
A new power line will connect the future Watkins and Meacham substations to the existing electrical system in northeastern Pinal County.
- Pinal County: Quail-Shipley line
A new power line will connect the Quail substation at Quail Run Lane and Bella Vista Road to the future Shipley substation at Cooper Road and Judd Road.
69kV projects currently under construction:
- Pinal County: Webber-Witherspoon-Watkins line
The new power line will link Webber substation (near Bella Vista Road and Hunt Highway) to the planned Witherspoon substation (near Hunt Highway and Magma Road) and to the planned Watkins substation (near the railroad and Judd Road).
- Pinal County: Dinosaur-Hunt line
A new overhead power line will connect the Dinosaur substation to the Hunt substation on Meridian Road, near Hashknife Draw Road.
