Definitions

  • Degree hour: The difference between a base temperature of 65°F (heating), 75°F (cooling), and the average ambient air temperature for the hour. If the average ambient air temperature for the hour falls below 65°F the degree hour is recorded as a heating degree hour. A cooling degree hour is recorded if the average air temperature for the hour rises above 75°F.
  • Degree day: The difference between a base temperature of 65°F (heating and cooling) and the average ambient air temperature for the day. If the average ambient air temperature for the day falls below 65°F, the degree day is recorded as a heating degree day. A cooling degree day is recorded if the average air temperature for the day rises above 65°F.
  • Base 75: Used in calculating the degree hours based on an outside air temperature of 75°F.
  • Base 65: Used in calculating the degree hours based on an outside air temperature of 65°F.
  • Dew point: The temperature to which air must be cooled in order to reach saturation (assuming air pressure and moisture content are constant).
