What is the DesertWise Water Conservation Expo?
This special event will be a chance to learn more about water saving devices for your yard. SRP will be offering discounts of 50% off the price of "smart" irrigation controllers at the event. Additionally, representatives from SRP and Valley Cities will be on hand to help you understand the water-saving programs in your area.
This year, we will have two locations and dates. Join us at SRP's PERA Club on Saturday, March 6 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or on the campus of the Glendale Public Library on Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Is the DesertWise Water Conservation Expo and smart controller discount open to anyone in the Valley?
Everyone is invited and welcome to attend the Water Conservation Expo. However, the special pricing on the smart irrigation controller is only available to SRP's water shareholders and/or power customers.
What is a smart irrigation controller?
Smart irrigation controllers tailor watering schedules and run times on sprinklers and/or drip systems, automatically, to meet specific landscape needs. These systems use weather information or site conditions to determine how much water to apply and when to run. Once installed and set, little additional monitoring is required.
How much water can a smart controller save?
Studies show most smart controllers will save about 25% of the water applied by a traditional controller. In the Valley, about 70% of a household's water usage occurs outdoors.
How much does a smart controller cost?
Out of pocket costs to SRP's power and water customers will be $147 (plus any applicable tax) at the event. Thanks to a special discount provided by the manufacturer and SRP paying 50% of the purchase price, this price is dramatically reduced from the normal retail price of $477.
Are there any additional charges or fees associated with these controllers?
There are no other fees associated with the smart controller selected by SRP. You may need to purchase a few additional installation materials depending on your existing system.
Can I install it myself or do I need to have a professional landscape professional do it?
Smart irrigation controllers vary in their complexity. Installation requires some basic electrical knowledge and can be accomplished by most homeowners in about three hours. SRP will provide a list of licensed landscape contractors who can perform the installation if you prefer.
Will SRP provide training on how to install and program these controllers?
Yes. SRP will provide workshops at the Expo for people purchasing the smart controllers. These workshops are mandatory for all participants who take advantage of SRP's discounted controller pricing that day.
Why was this smart irrigation controller model selected?
SRP selected a device that is relatively easy to install and program. This weather-based irrigation controller has been tested by Center for Irrigation Technology. Additionally, this model has been used in other community programs in the West.
How many stations can the selected smart irrigation controller model support?
SRP selected a device for this initial promotion that can support a maximum of nine stations, four programs and comes in a weather-resistant case that can be installed indoors or outdoors.
Why is SRP discounting the price of this smart irrigation controller?
Conserving water is always important in our desert community. SRP wants to partner with its customers to find ways to use water more efficiently.
If I cannot attend the March events, is there any way for me to get the controller at a discounted price after the event?
Unfortunately, we are only able to provide the training and discount at the Water Conservation Expo. Proper programming will ensure the most efficient operation of your smart controller over time.
How long do you plan on continuing this program?
One objective of this offering is to educate the public on the benefits of smart irrigation controllers. We will assess the future of the program at the conclusion of this event.
Can SRP's urban irrigation customers participate in this event?
Yes. While this smart irrigation controller will not change or enhance your irrigation deliveries from SRP, you can purchase a smart controller and replace a standard irrigation controller that runs other landscape watering systems - for example, sprinklers and drip systems.
Can commercial facilities participate in this event?
This program is aimed at residential homeowners. The smart irrigation controller selected for this event is sized for residential deployment and has the ability to run four programs with eight stations. If a commercial facility meets the criteria of being an SRP water shareholder and/or power customer, they can participate in the event. Only one controller per household or business.
