Water safety

Although metropolitan Phoenix is in the middle of the Sonoran desert, the network of canals, nearby lakes and abundance of swimming pools in the area pose potential water hazards.

The following tips provided through the SRP Safety Connection can help you play it safe around the water.

Drowning prevention initiatives

In most instances, drownings occur in pools with no barriers, or when parents momentarily leave children unsupervised near a body of water.

SRP supports several key drowning prevention initiatives, including the United Phoenix Firefighters – Adopt A Fence Program, which provides free pool fences to qualifying families in need.

Children under 4 years old have the highest drowning death rate (two- to three-times greater than other age groups) and account for 80% of home drownings, which typically occur in swimming pools and bathtubs. SRP Safety Connection has partnered with Valley fire departments to spread the message to always watch children around water — even in the bathtub.
