NERO honors SRP with Energy Efficiency Award

M-Power, the largest electricity pre-payment program in the country, and a popular option for customers who tend to more closely monitor their energy usage, attracted national attention and a top accolade from the National Energy Resources Organization (NERO).

SRP's Debbie Kimberly accepts the NERO award.During its annual awards ceremony in Washington D.C., NERO presented SRP with the first-place award for Energy Efficiency in June 2008, which recognizes programs and activities that promote and enhance energy efficiency.

"The in-home display used in SRP's M-Power program is what makes electricity 'tangible' to our customers," said SRP's Debbie Kimberly. "They are more aware and conscious of the energy they use, and as a result, they have more control over their energy bills."

M-Power cuts energy usage

Customers enrolled in M-Power typically experience an annual reduction in household energy consumption of about 12%, or 1,750 kilowatt-hours (kWh). As a result, the entire class of M-Power customers currently saves 84 gigawatt-hours (gWh) per year and has saved 375 gWh since 2000.

At present, more than 50,000 customers use M-Power and SRP expects to add 10,000 more per year during the next five years. Customers say they like being able to monitor their power usage and that it makes them more aware of the amount of energy they use. They also say they like to be able to pay at their own pace without the pressure of a monthly electric bill. Surveys show that 90% of SRP's M-Power customers are highly satisfied with the program.

"Providing customers with information that results in energy conservation and customer satisfaction - M-Power is a win-win partnership for our customers and for SRP," said Kimberly.
