The SRP Community Solar program, which allows customers to get solar energy without installing panels on their rooftops, is offering a new, lower price beginning May 1.

Community Solar is an easy, convenient way for customers to offset their electricity usage with solar energy. The new, lower price can be locked in for five years and gives customers potential to save on their energy bills.

"This program offers an alternative to the traditional method of installing solar systems on rooftops while allowing more customers to support clean energy," said Lori Singleton, Director of Emerging Customer Programs for Solar, Sustainability and Telecom. "It is particularly attractive for customers who are unable to install panels because their home's roof is unsuitable, they rent instead of own, or they simply don't want the commitment."

SRP Community Solar customers also benefit from no upfront costs, maintenance or long-term contracts. In addition, participants can cancel at any time.

Since the Community Solar program began in 2011, SRP provides nearly 1,800 residential customers and 100 schools with energy from Copper Crossing Solar Ranch, a 20-megawatt solar plant located in Florence. The plant's 66,000 high-efficiency solar panels use very little water and track the sun throughout the day to produce up to 40% more energy than a stationary rooftop system.

The SRP Board has set a goal to meet 20 percent of SRP's retail electricity requirements through sustainable resources by the year 2020. Currently, SRP is ahead of schedule - providing about 11 percent of retail energy needs with sustainable resources, including wind, geothermal, solar, landfill gas, biomass and hydropower as well as energy-efficiency programs.
