Recycling centers offered for CFLs
SRP partners with ACE Hardware to recycle CFL bulbs, help environment
To make it easier for electric customers to properly dispose of CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs), Salt River Project is partnering with ACE Hardware to provide recycling opportunities across the Valley. SRP customers can drop off burned-out CFL bulbs in recycling pails at more than 20 participating ACE Hardware stores.
"Our CFL recycling centers in participating ACE Hardware stores will make it easier for our customers to turn in their CFLs after they have completed their lifecycles," said Debbie Kimberly, SRP's manager of Energy Efficiency and Policy Analysis.
Kimberly said that according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, CFLs use up to 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs and produce about 75 percent less heat, so they're safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling. They also contain small amounts of mercury - about enough to cover the tip of a ballpoint pen -- and should be recycled after they burn out.
"Conserving energy is important for living wisely in the desert, and switching to ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs is a great way to be power wise," said Kimberly.
Go to SRP's PowerWise page for information on CFL recycling locations, where and how to use CFLs for best results, discounts and other energy-saving advice and offers.
SRP is the largest provider of electricity to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, serving about 935,000 customers in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
