Mesa hospital gets SRP energy-efficiency rebates

Two programs boost Banner Desert Medical Center expansion

SRP has presented the first of two rebate checks totaling $75,000 to Banner Desert Medical Center for installing cost-effective, energy-efficiency equipment as part of the Mesa hospital's major campus expansion.

The two commercial rebate programs will also be beneficial to the environment. According to SRP estimates, Banner Desert will realize estimated yearly savings of 66,000 kilowatt-hours via high-efficiency motors, 1.9 million kilowatt-hours from variable frequency drives (VFDs) and 918,705 kilowatt-hours from chillers – the equivalent of powering 190 residential homes and reducing more than 2,120 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

SRP's commercial rebate programs offer cash rebates for industry-proven, high-efficiency equipment; lower energy costs; less downtime and repairs with new and improved equipment; and equipment that avails increased comfort and safety through cleaner, healthier indoor and outdoor environments.

Banner Desert, the first SRP customer to get the full cash benefit of both commercial rebate programs, is in the home stretch of a construction program involving a seven-story new tower for the children's hospital, expanded adult and pediatric emergency departments and several remodel projects. When completed in fall 2009, the project will increase the number of licensed beds for children from 137 to 220 and update various Banner campus facilities.

"These were the right programs at the right time for us," said Jay Stallings, Banner Desert's associate administrator, who added that SRP's rebate program – along with SRP's staff – helped Banner "bring the right science and the right skill sets to the table."
