SRP supplies green energy for Super Bowl
SRP provides funds for tree planting; renewable energy for various events
As the local provider of electricity for Super Bowl XLII in Glendale on Sunday, February 3, SRP is helping to make this a green event. SRP will provide green energy to the University of Phoenix Stadium for the game as well as the NFL Experience Football Theme Park and to two hotels hosting guests in town for the game and other events.
"The Super Bowl is a huge event for Arizona, and all eyes will be on the state," said Lori Singleton, SRP Manager of Sustainable Initiatives and Technologies. "Providing green energy to the game is an excellent opportunity to showcase our state's commitment to clean energy resources and to educate the public about the importance of renewable energy."
For the first time, the electricity needed to power the Super Bowl game will be from 100 percent renewable energy resources. As part of the EarthWise Energy Program, SRP will supply renewable energy to offset greenhouse gas emissions associated with Super Bowl XLII and the NFL Experience. In addition, the Fox Broadcasting Company, which will broadcast the game, will be purchasing renewable energy from SRP to power four nights at The Ritz-Carlton in Phoenix and The Phoenician in Scottsdale where the network will be hosting individuals attending or participating in the event. Fox shares the NFL's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its agreement to purchase renewable energy from SRP's EarthWise Energy.
SRP Earthwise Energy is a diverse mix of renewable-energy sources including solar, wind, landfill gas, geothermal and low-head hydro. This program is also available to SRP residential and business customers who are interested in being green and investing in clean renewable energy.
In addition, SRP has partnered with the NFL Environmental Program, Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Forest Service, the Arizona State Land Department - Office of the State Forester, Home Depot Foundation, the Arizona Cardinals, the Arizona Community Tree Council, and local engineering firm RBF Consulting on several forestry projects including the planting of 42 acres of trees in the White Mountains near Cibecue, and another 42 acres in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, both areas devastated in 2002 by the Rodeo-Chediski Fire. Also included is a series of urban forestry projects at seven local school campuses where a total of 42 trees will be planted this month to celebrate Super Bowl XLII.
