Map of Trees for Change area
Projects took place in two major areas during spring 2010:
- 202,000 native ponderosa pine seedlings were planted across 774 acres in the Kaibab National Forest along Highway 67 at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This area was burned by the 2006 Warm Fire, which consumed 58,640 acres of woodland. Plantings will help restore habitat for rare species as well as improve the watershed damaged by the fire.
- 82,000 native ponderosa pine seedlings were planted across 510 acres on the Black Mesa Ranger District. This area was burned by the 2002 Rodeo-Chediski Fire, which consumed more than 467,000 acres of woodland. Planting took place in three areas:
- Within 1/4 mile of the Bison Ranch residential development
- Three miles south of the town of Overgaard
- The Lakeside Ranger District near the town of Lakeside
Plantings help restore habitat for rare species, including the northern goshawk.
Over the life of this regenerated forest, this planting helps to sequester 26,500 metric tons of CO² equivalents.
