An agreement reached between SRP and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will result in a significant reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter from the Coronado Generating Station, located in St. Johns.
The Coronado power plant, owned and operated by SRP, was completed in 1980 and uses coal as a fuel to generate electricity from two 400-megawatt units. The plant is already equipped with scrubbers that are designed to capture sulfur dioxide emissions and includes electrostatic precipitators to control fly ash.
The agreement with the EPA requires SRP to install new state-of-the-art emission-control technology to capture additional emissions and further protect visibility in national parks and wilderness areas.
Air quality in the vicinity of the Coronado plant currently meets all national ambient air-quality standards established by the federal agency.
