Mowing Down Pollution helps clear the air
The annual Mowing Down Pollution event previously announced for May 1-2, and May 8-9 at the PERA Club in Tempe has been canceled.
Since 1996, SRP has subsidized this annual event so Valley residents could recycle old gas-powered yard equipment and purchase new electric versions at discounted prices. During this economic downturn, the 2009 event has been suspended as part of an effort to control costs. We look forward to offering the program again next year.
Pollution sources eliminated
Mowing Down Pollution helps Phoenix-area residents to reduce pollution in metropolitan Phoenix by recycling their gas mowers, old electric mowers and gas-powered lawn and garden equipment. In 2008, SRP customers recycled 1,368 mowers and 552 pieces of handheld lawn equipment. In fact, one lucky customer received a free mower for turning in the 20,000 mower recycled.
Since the program began, more than 20,589 households now mow with clean electric lawn mowers. The program eliminates summer ozone-causing pollutants and carbon monoxide emissions from the Valley's air.
Program earns EPA award
The largest lawn mower recycling program in the United States, Mowing Down Pollution has earned national recognition. Most notably, the program received an Earth Day Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA award salutes "demonstrated commitment and significant contributions to the environment" in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada and tribal lands. The EPA selected 46 groups and individuals from more than 160 nominees, seven of which were from Arizona. The EPA presented the award to SRP at Valley Forward EarthFest during 2000.
