Power your home with clean SRP EarthWise Energy
SRP EarthWise Energy produces electricity from renewable resources such as the sun, wind, the earth's heat, flowing water in our canals and even decomposing garbage in landfills. As a customer, you can support the production of this clean energy by paying a small added amount on your monthly electricity bill.
By producing electricity using renewable sources, we help preserve precious natural resources, improve air quality and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. SRP powered University of Phoenix Stadium with EarthWise Energy for Super Bowl XLII in February 2008. When you sign up for EarthWise Energy, you'll be joining in the effort to support clean energy. SRP
business customers can also participate.
What is EarthWise Energy?
Below is a description of the various renewable resources used to make SRP EarthWise Energy. Please also see this list of frequently asked questions about the program.
Solar electric generation: The sun is a continuous source of clean
energy. By capturing this energy in a photovoltaic (PV) system, which is comprised of modules of
semiconductor cells, we convert solar photons into energy. Our PV plants use this clean and inexhaustible
source of fuel to produce emission-free electricity.
Wind generation: Wind-generation is one of the nation's fastest-growing
energy resources, according to the American Wind Energy Association. In October 2003, SRP entered into a
five-year contract to purchase 50 megawatts of wind power from Public Service Company of New Mexico. The clean
wind-generated energy provides us with 61,600 megawatt-hours each year, or enough electricity to meet the
power needs of about 4,200 homes in metropolitan Phoenix.
Landfill gas generation: When trash decomposes, harmful gasses that
may contribute to global warming are released into the environment. We capture those gasses and use them to
fuel five internal combustion engines at a power generating facility at the Salt River Pima/Maricopa Indian
Community.
"Low-impact" hydroelectric generation: Our hydroelectric
project takes SRP back to its roots – using the flowing water of the canals to produce electricity.
SRP has installed a hydroelectric plant on the Arizona Canal at an historic site known as
Arizona Falls Here, power to turn a steam turbine is generated by water falling over the canal's 20-foot natural drop in elevation. As a result, hydroelectricity is generated with a lower environmental impact than that produced by a dam.
Geothermal generation: Geothermal energy is generated by
converting hot water or steam from deep beneath the Earth's crust into electricity. Geothermal plants emit
very little air pollution, have minimal impact on the environment, and are independent of climatic variation.
The electricity generated by the above sources is sent to SRP's electric system, where it becomes a part of
our primary energy supply and ultimately is available to all SRP customers. SRP EarthWise Energy is just one of the many ways we demonstrate an environmental commitment to Arizona.
How it works
EarthWise Energy is available in $3-per-month increments. This amount will be added to your monthly bill.
You can choose $3 additional per month, or $6, $9 or $12. The amount you pay SRP for your
regular electricity usage remains the same.
Premiums received from the SRP EarthWise Energy program help build SRP
environmental projects in the community such as solar-powered interactive exhibits at the Phoenix Zoo and solar panels on parking structures at the Red Mountain Ranch Library in Mesa and a Park 'N' Ride in Phoenix.
