Spring 2010
Cut energy costs while you're away
You may be planning an escape from the summer. Before you go on vacation, give your cooling system and household appliances some time off, too.
To help cut energy costs while you're away for a trip of five days or more, follow this advice:
Unless there is something in your home that is heat sensitive, turn your heat pump or central air conditioner off. If you prefer to leave it on, set the thermostat between 85° and 87°.
- Close blinds and drapes to keep the heat out. Place several large buckets of water in the bath tub to boost humidity inside your home.
- Turn the electric water heater off at the circuit breaker, and close the cold water inlet valve. Before you turn the breaker back on, open the supply line and run water from the hot-water faucet to be certain the heater is full.
- Unplug computers, televisions and cell phone chargers that may use power even though they're not in use. Set timers to control lights you want on for security purposes.
- If you have a pool, make sure the filter motor is on a timer and that proper chemical levels are maintained.
