Webber-Witherspoon-Watkins project
SRP selected the route for the Webber-Witherspoon-Watkins 69,000 volt (69kV) subtransmission line in Pinal County, in the Johnson Ranch area.
The route was selected based upon input from community associations, residents, property owners and state and local agencies. SRP engineers considered other factors in their final route selection, including future electrical needs, construction feasibility, maintenance issues, land rights, aesthetics and cost.
The new line will start at the Webber substation and head east on the north side of Bella Vista. The existing poles on Bella Vista will be changed to new poles that can accommodate a second set of wires. The new line will then parallel the existing Western Area Power Association (WAPA) power line corridor south from Bella Vista all the way to the planned Witherspoon substation south of Magma Road. The line will then head east along the Magma Road alignment and connect to the planned Watkins substation along the UPRR railroad tracks.
The map below highlights the project area and selected route. You can also view an aerial map of the selected route (2.2MB PDF).

The new line connecting Webber to Watkins is now under construction. The Witherspoon substation is scheduled to be in service at a later date.
Homeowners along the selected route will be notified prior to the start of the construction.
This new line will bring additional electricity to your area to support growing demand. It will also help SRP to continue providing the low-cost electricity you receive.
SRP held an open house Aug. 2, 2006 in Queen Creek, Ariz. to encourage area residents to learn more about the project and participate in the selection of the routes for the new 69kV lines by providing feedback.
SRP employees who specialize in planning, engineering
and land management were present to answer
questions.

Typically, new 69kV lines are built on a mix of steel and wood poles, about 65-75 feet tall.
The 69kV subtransmission network serves as the backbone of SRP's neighborhood electrical system. These power lines interconnect the neighborhood substations, providing system redundancy and added reliability. Our 69kV lines can be found along almost any linear feature that serves as a transportation corridor, including major arterial streets, canals, freeways and railroads.
Whether we are providing for the needs of a new community, subdivision or business park, or meeting the enhancement needs of an existing neighborhood, SRP's goal remains constant: provide the low-cost, reliable electricity that you have come to expect from us.
SRP anticipates continued customer growth in Pinal County. To ensure you have reliable power, we must build new lines and substations. As always, we strive to provide the community with advance notice of new substations and power lines and provide opportunities for the public to offer input on the new facilities.
Thank you for your comments and suggestions on the Webber-Witherspoon-Watkins project. We will continue to inform you as this project moves forward.
