Morcom Loop 69kV project

SRP is exploring and considering ways to improve power reliability in the Queen Creek area.

Project details

SRP plans to build two new neighborhood distribution substations in southern Queen Creek to help address the electrical service needs of your growing community.

Scheduled to be in service by winter 2010, Morcom substation will be built on the west side of Ellsworth Road, south of Riggs Road. The future Bateman substation will be located on the northwest corner of Riggs and Sossaman roads. This substation may be needed by 2015, depending on how quickly this area continues to grow.

69kV lines will connect both substations to the existing power lines along Empire Boulevard.Map of Morcom Loop study area

Need for power

Like many SRP communities, Queen Creek is planning for commercial and residential growth. In addition, SRP customers are using more power; even with energy-efficient appliances, the popularity and proliferation of home electronics mean the average home is using about 10% more electricity than a decade ago. SRP's challenge is to continue delivering power in the efficient, reliable manner to which our customers have grown accustomed.

To do so, we need to make significant upgrades to our facilities and add new resources, including substations and power lines, to ensure quality electricity transmission and delivery to all SRP neighborhoods and communities.

Public involvement

SRP is conducting a collaborative public process to determine the most cost-effective and beneficial way to enhance the 69kV delivery system in Queen Creek. This means we will be talking to individual residents as well as holding open houses to share information and obtain feedback from the community. We want to ensure all important issues unique to your community are considered.

SRP held an open house on June 5, 2008, to share information about the power needs of your community and gather feedback on possible route options. Based on that input and engineering criteria, SRP is proposing four route options for the new 69kV lines.

SRP held a second open house on July 17, 2008 for area residents to learn more about the project. Residents were asked for their route preference for the project. If you were unable to attend, you may email your route preference and comments to 69kv@srpnet.com or fax them to (602) 236-2003.

About 69kV projects

Typically, new 69kV lines are built on a mix of steel and wood poles, about 65-75 feet tall.

The 69kV subtransmission network serves as the backbone of SRP's neighborhood electrical system. These power lines interconnect the neighborhood substations, providing system redundancy and added reliability. Our 69kV lines can be found along almost any linear feature that serves as a transportation corridor, including major arterial streets, canals, freeways and railroads.

Whether we are providing for the needs of a new community, subdivision or business park, or meeting the enhancement needs of an existing neighborhood, SRP's goal remains constant: provide the low-cost, reliable electricity that you have come to expect from us.
