SRP accelerates push to 1 million smart meters

Installation is under way to get 1 million smart meters to all SRP residential and commercial customers by 2013.

SRP is using $56.9 million in stimulus funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, and providing matching funding, to double its smart meter installation and Smart Grid infrastructure. About 14,000 smart meters are being installed each month, and SRP expects that virtually all customers will have these advanced meters by April 2013.

Smart meters help SRP customers to better monitor and manage their energy consumption based on Time-of-Day price plans like TOU and EZ-3.

Smart meters also enable SRP to:

• Remotely address more than 1.5 million customer orders
• Save more than 500,000 in labor hours
• Avoid more than 2.6 million driving miles
• Conserve 210,000 gallons of fuel
