Applied Science Grants by SRP

Applied Science Grants by SRP challenges high school student teams to design and plan a project that involves practical application of scientific principles. Projects must utilize applied science or technology to resolve a specific problem, question or issue. SRP offers grants up to $5,000 to fund these projects to qualifying schools.

Criteria

Projects should center on topics in one of two categories: environmental science education and physical/life science applications (applied physics, biology and chemistry). Projects should demonstrate creativity, involve hands-on activities, have an interdisciplinary approach and relate science to students' lives.

Eligibility is open to high schools in Maricopa, Pinal, Yavapai, and Gila Counties, Page and St. Johns.

To participate in the 2008-09 Applied Science Grant Program and receive a grant, schools must meet the following criteria:

  • Student teams must design and produce a working model or display of their project.
  • Projects must demonstrate practical application of scientific principles and show evidence of student hands-on involvement.
  • Projects must be creative and motivate students to do science. Unique ways of applying science to technology and making science more accessible to students are encouraged. Proposals that ask for equipment without describing an innovative application of the same will not be eligible for funding.
  • Projects must be safe, and comply with all school policies, and community/state/federal laws.
  • No individual may profit from the project or its product(s), but your school or community may realize a practical benefit.

Please be sure to read the complete application criteria details, which include information about what is required in your proposal submission.

Grant categories

Proposals must describe the specifics of the project, outline the impact on students, and provide a detailed budget of no more than $5,000. Applied Science grants will be awarded in two categories, described below:

  • Environmental science education
  • Physical/life science applications

Environmental science education: This category funds projects that emphasize the efficient use of natural resources and protection of the environment. Students participating in these projects should gain an increased awareness of their own interdependence with the natural world. Projects can include environmental topics such as water conservation or water quality, air quality, land, plants and animals, recycling, transportation or renewable energy.

Physical/life science applications: This category includes projects that relate the laws, principles, and concepts of science (physics, biology, and chemistry) to phenomena and events relevant to students' lives. Unique ways of applying science to technology and making physical science more accessible to students are encouraged. Projects can also include topics such as robotics, biosciences, technology and transportation.

Grant award amount

The total amount of this grant program is $50,000 during this year. Up to $5,000 may be awarded to any one school. Dollar amounts for awards will be driven by demonstrated need.

School eligibility

All 9-12th grade school educators in Maricopa, Pinal, Yavapai and Gila counties, Page and St. Johns may apply for an Applied Science Grant by SRP.
