Time Well Spent
SRP's "Latch & Lock It!" program
It takes only one unlocked gate and a young life can be lost. Drowning deaths of unsupervised children are an unfortunate, yet ever- present reality in the Valley of the Sun, where swimming pools abound.
SRP has long sought to help residents take appropriate measures to promote water safety. This year, an innovative program is helping us do this more effectively. Through the "Latch & Lock It!" program, SRP meter readers and field service crews, who regularly read and replace electric meters in Valley back yards, will have their eyes out for unlatched swimming pool gates.
While these personnel usually take the precaution of latching unsecured gates, they now are equipped with plastic tags printed with a bilingual water safety reminder, which they leave affixed to the gate. The tag reminds the homeowner how essential it is to prevent pool access by unsupervised children. If even one child is saved by this simple reminder, it is an investment well worth making.
