Verde River Canoe Challenge

Verde River Canoe ChallengeThe Verde River is essential to SRP's mission of delivering water to the people of central Arizona. In fact, in a normal year, about 40 percent of SRP's surface water comes from this picturesque river winding its way through Arizona's Verde Valley. But the river is about more than just delivering water, it has a character all its own.

In 2007, SRP once again sponsored the Verde River Canoe Challenge. Starting at White Bridge Park near Camp Verde, contestants raced to Beasley Flats, a distance of approximately 10 river miles. There were 130 entries - a record for this event, now in its sixth year. Prior to the race, canoe crews were given information and resources explaining the delicate balance of environmental forces acting upon the Verde, and the river's importance to the people of Arizona.

Events such as the Verde River Canoe Challenge represent an important opportunity to help educate local residents on watershed issues. Beyond that, racing canoes is just plain fun!
