Springerville Unit 4 expansion project

SRP is constructing a new 400 MW, coal-fired generating unit at the existing Springerville Generating Station (SGS) in Springerville, Arizona.

The new generating unit, Unit 4 (or SGS4) will help SRP meet future customer needs and provides the utility with a more diverse generation portfolio.

About Unit 4

  • Generating capacity: Unit 4 has 400 MW of generating capacity.
  • Expansion cost: The Unit 4 expansion project will cost approximately $600-700 million.
  • Fuel source: Low-sulfur coal. Historically, coal has lower price volatility and will provide a more secure energy future for Arizona than other fuels. In addition, coal reduces our dependence on natural gas.
  • Emissions: Air emission controls on Unit 4 will meet EPA's Best Available Control Technology (BACT) requirements. Furthermore, emission controls on Units 1 and 2 were upgraded as part of the plant expansion. As a result, emissions from all four units will be less than the original two units.
  • Environmental impact: The plant utilizes a proven and dependable water supply. Well fields that supply the four units are from aquifers deeper and separate from the aquifer that the towns rely on.
  • Economic impact: This plant further enhances the Apache County economic base by expanding the property tax base and the addition of new full-time, high-paying jobs with benefits.

Timeline

  • Start of construction: February 2007
  • Plant completion: Completion and commercial operation is planned for December 2009.
