Letter from the General Manager

The core sustainability challenge for SRP — and the energy industry as a whole — is to provide reliable, safe and reasonably priced energy to support the future while managing emissions.

Our history of sustainability began a century ago with the construction of Theodore Roosevelt Dam, the first hydroelectric facility to deliver power to the Phoenix area. Today, our Sustainable Portfolio includes a mix of wind, geothermal, solar, landfill gas, hydrogeneration and fuel cell technology, as well as creative approaches to energy efficiency. In multiple ways, we’re actively moving toward a more sustainable future.

Earlier this year, SRP conducted a public process to review and update our Sustainable Portfolio Principles. These principles, created in 2004 and last amended in 2006, set a goal for SRP to move steadily toward increasing our sustainable energy resources as a percent of total retail requirements.

In May, the SRP Board of Directors voted to raise SRP’s Sustainable Portfolio goals, approving these revisions to the principles:

  • We have created a target so that by fiscal year 2020 (FY20), we will meet 20% of our expected retail energy requirements with sustainable resources. This target includes the percentage of retail energy requirements met with renewable resources and energy-efficiency savings.

  • We will seek opportunities to exceed the 2020 target by pursuing expanded options that can contribute to this objective.
  • We will undertake comprehensive education efforts to inform customers and stakeholders of our sustainability efforts. I encourage you to visit www.srpnet.com/principles for more detailed information about our Sustainable Portfolio Principles.

This report highlights SRP’s significant efforts in FY11, as well as our sustainability results and operating statistics.

By striving to produce the maximum sustainable energy benefit for the lowest reasonable cost to our customers, our goal is to ensure we leave a legacy of sustainability for future generations.
